Jellyfish Stings in the Big Apple: Yomico 2.0

May 23, 2023 / Tattoo Tourism

The second visit to Meserole Street in Brooklyn was timed to coincide with Family Weekend at Yale. My oldest son, Danny and I took a trip together and first visited his younger bro Josh on Old Campus. After a fun couple of days in New Haven and the joy of seeing Josh well-settled into daily life in college, Danny and I drove down to the city. Parking was atrocious: hardly any spots, plenty of false-hopes (too close to a vaguely-worded sign or fire hydrant), and the need to move the car every day on account of alternate-day parking, purportedly to permit for street-cleaning, though that might actually be a myth. It sucked. And on the second day when trying to get into a tight spot I caught the front bumper on a trailer hitch and gouged one of the headlight panels. Ugh. Next time it'll be an Uber.

Our Airbnb had a nifty chaise lounge outside on the fire escape. I was tempted, but didn't climb out the window to check it out.

Yomico went after the jellyfish with tenacity. The use of red and pink and white really add some nice vibrancy to the piece. As usual I brought some imported rum as a pseudo-gift, drinking about half and sharing the rest. Somehow there was some wine, too.

The jelly looked great. Lighting was really well-done and cast some glow on everything around the jelly in an accurate fashion. The tendrils hanging from the body weren't done, but I knew they wouldn't look like spaghetti for very long. Yomico indicated the fourth and final session would include the finishing touches on that.

Steve Butcher from LA, Dave Paulo from Madrid, and Q from S. Korea were in town to work on a collaboration. Great guys and very animated, especially Steve! He's got some amazing stories.

It was great to meet these very talented characters and see how much camaraderie there is at the top echelon of the tattoo world. No rivalries, no jealousy, no competition. Just fun, incredible collaboration, and lots of joking around.

These two days weren't very painful. Things just aren't so rough away from the flank, nipples and bony prominences. Nothing a little Gabapentin and a tiny dose of Tramadol (prescribed by my PCP for this purpose) couldn't dispatch... I had the regimen fully down by this point--smooth sailing till the next session. We took the damaged auto rental back to LaGuardia and I called my credit card company to fess up.
